Programme Details

Course Content & Timeline

The Jing Fang Qualification programme is as a hybrid course, consisting of pre-recorded lectures, online study, online supervision and clinic sessions, and in-person clinical days.

In each year, you are offered:

  • 20 audio lectures divided into 5 modules.
  • Each lecture is supported by a quiz, and completion of the quiz will release your next lecture.
  • Ten online clinicals. These take place on Monday and Tuesday mornings approximately every months. The Monday is devoted to seeing patients, and the Tuesday to case discussion and questions.
  • Five personal supervisions. You can bring any questions or cases to these supervisions for discussion, as well as any other issues arising.
  • Five group supervisions. These group sessions provide a supervised discussion forum for questions on all aspects of Jing Fang, as well as cases, lead by an experienced Jing Fang practitioner.
  • Three in person clinical days in Oxfordshire. This clinical block usually take place as a summer school, and we recommend that you stay in the area during this time. Half of each day will be seeing patients, with discussion for the other half of the day.

The Jing Fang Qualification Programme is a flexible approach which mixes online learning with real time supervision and clinicals. It typically takes two years to complete the programme, but it can be shorter or longer depending on your personal needs and situation.

Outsourced modules

In addition, once during your programme you need to attend:

  • a dispensary day at the Bristol Herb Garden, or the equivalent in your own area.
  • short pharmacology and phytochemistry course (we will recommend one to you).

What Our Students Say:

It has been the most remarkable and fulfilling educational experience I have ever had.

Suzanne Mounter, Graduate 2020

It has been the single most helpful thing I’ve done for my health – it’s been life changing.

Simone Irmscher, Patient 2022

The Jing Fang introductory lectures are extremely useful. The information is explained in a very clear and structured manner, with case studies that illustrate all the different formula patterns. The audio is a bonus. These lectures provide a very solid base that complement the practical side of the apprenticeship and help consolidate your learning.

Cristina Lopez-Pasqual, Graduate 2022

It has been rewarding and challenging to use this medicine. Every patient is a teacher!

Victoria Conran, Graduate 2019

It has been the most remarkable and fulfilling educational experience I have ever had, because the learning is done through observing real patients and seeing how Frances diagnoses and treats them. Every week I’m there, I learn something new whether it is about herbs or formulas or syndromes. And being at the clinic is always hugely interesting. Doing Frances’s course and learning the Jing Fang pattern diagnosis has changed the way I treat my own patients as an acupuncturist.

Suzanne Mounter, Graduate 2020

Dr Feng, you have turned my world upside-down with this wonderful Jing Fang system… reading your case histories is inspirational.

Gail Newton, Supervisor 2021

I have been very lucky to meet Frances Turner and study the Jing Fang tradition you have shared all over the world. It’s a truly wonderful medicine, which I absolutely love to continue learning and practicing. So many have benefited from these teachings.

Naoko Taoka, Graduate 2019

Your depth of knowledge, as well as your warmth and willingness to share it, have made the last two years the most important and enjoyable of my career to date.

Tom Kennedy, Graduate 2021
Thank you for bringing Jing Fang into my life, it has done miracles for my health…I feel so privileged to have discovered this lineage.
Anna van der Vlies, Acupuncturist and Chinese Herbal Medicine Practitioner

Frances does a wonderful job of teaching Jing Fang to us in England, online and in person. It has transformed my herbal practice into being more effective, with quicker results, and being more curative.

Vasanthy Watt, Supervisor 2022

It is such a privilege to be studying the Jing Fang Apprenticeship with Frances Turner, and I cannot wait to incorporate this incredible system into my practice to help patients.

Cristina Lopez-Pasqual, Graduate 2022

Additional Costs

Bristol Chinese Herb Garden Dispensary Day: Price tbc but in the region of £100

Tony Harrison runs a dispensary day in Bristol, where you can also visit the Chinese Herb Garden and see the herbs growing, as well as learn to make creams, tinctures and pills. This is an invaluable resource and highly recommended. You can access Tony’s free videos on Youtube, and particularly useful is the one on pao zhi: Pao zhi herbal processing explained.

Pharmacology and phytochemistry with Chris Everidge: Price tbc but in the region of £200

Phytochemistry and pharmacology are huge subjects that in themselves merit degree level training. Chris Everidge has a passion for this subject and has for many years run an online two day introductory course that gives you a taste of these subjects and their relationship to the classical approach to Chinese herbal medicine. This course gives us a sense of the wider context of Chinese herbal medicine in the UK today. We will also consider accepting attendance at an alternative course in your local area.

Textbooks & DVD sets

You may also like to buy some textbooks; please see the resources list for a complete list. In particular, a good formulary and a materia medica are essential tools for a herbalist, and the DVD sets from Dr Feng ShiLun are an invaluable insight into his practice, giving us many Jing Fang case examples.

Insurance

An important part of the learning process on SCCH’s Jing Fang Qualification involves students treating patients with herbs, under the supervision of our tutors. In order to carry this out you will need student/supervised insurance for herbal medicine. This is available from Balens – we will provide any documentation required for you to obtain this.

After you have completed the course, you will be able to upgrade your insurance as a fully qualified herbal medicine practitioner.
